What exactly is a film director? What do they do?
The director oversees all areas of production. They’re the captain of the ship, guiding the film from start to complete, so they work intently with each individual concerned throughout the project.
Pre production
The director guides or makes all the inventive choices with the related departments, from casting to art department, cinematography, wardrobe, places, scripting, storyboarding etc. While they’re making these choices, the producer (the logistical lead in film production) organises everything to make the shoot happen — scheduling, permits, equipment hire, catering, etc.
Production
On set, the director is in control of the inventive vision and execution of the shoot. He or she oversees all areas of production but primarily focuses on performance and visuals, making certain the inventive vision is fulfilling its potential. We think of the director as staff captain on set, they're the ones who make decisions on set in order for the shoot to move forward and progress; this means they carry lots of the pressure on a project.
Post production
As soon as the shoot is full, the director guides the editor in structuring the footage, sound, and color to deliver out the story they've in mind. The editor is often the one doing the daily tasks; making the person decisions that best align with the director’s vision.
Working with a director ensures clear delineation of responsibility; there’s one one who is holding the total vision of the project of their head and making selections accordingly. They’re fitting all the items collectively for you. This means that the people fulfilling different production roles are able to focus exclusively on their own tasks, instead of splitting their attention.
That said, our directors are all outfitted to work across more than one role, the place the project requires it — we simply make certain when we’re scheduling that we’re allowing sufficient time for one particular person to fulfil roles well.
Why do you have got more than one director on your books? How are they totally different?
Each director’s creative choices have been formed by their personal experiences, which form the idea of their model; something that defines their work as distinctive. Therefore, when it comes to selecting the best fit director for a given project, the selection is not ‘one-size-fits-all’.
One director is likely to be extraordinary in their dealing with of sensitive subject matter, deftly eliciting an emotional story. Another might need a vivid and punchy visual model that completely suits the communication model of a selected project, while yet one more could be great at working with children to draw out beautiful or hilarious performances. Each film and each consumer is totally different, which is why a director is chosen on a project by project basis relying on shoot requirements.
On the more logistical side of things, if a production company has more than one director on their books it means they will work on more than one project at a time. On any given day there could possibly be a number of different shoots taking place which clearly requires multiple directors & crews.
