What precisely is a film director? What do they do?
The director oversees all areas of production. They’re the captain of the ship, guiding the film from start to finish, so that they work closely with each person concerned throughout the project.
Pre production
The director guides or makes all the inventive choices with the related departments, from casting to art department, cinematography, wardrobe, places, scripting, storyboarding etc. While they’re making these choices, the producer (the logistical lead in film production) organises everything to make the shoot occur — scheduling, permits, equipment hire, catering, etc.
Production
On set, the director is accountable for the artistic vision and execution of the shoot. He or she oversees all areas of production but primarily focuses on performance and visuals, ensuring the inventive vision is fulfilling its potential. We think of the director as workforce captain on set, they are the ones who make choices on set to ensure that the shoot to move forward and progress; this means they carry numerous the pressure on a project.
Post production
As soon as the shoot is full, the director guides the editor in structuring the footage, sound, and colour to bring out the story they have in mind. The editor is normally the one doing the day by day tasks; making the individual choices that best align with the director’s vision.
Working with a director ensures clear delineation of responsibility; there’s one one that is holding the total vision of the project in their head and making decisions accordingly. They’re fitting all of the items together for you. This signifies that the people fulfilling other production roles are able to focus solely on their own tasks, instead of splitting their attention.
That said, our directors are all equipped to work throughout more than one role, where the project requires it — we merely make positive after we’re scheduling that we’re permitting sufficient time for one particular person to fulfil two roles well.
Why do you might have more than one director on your books? How are they completely different?
Each director’s artistic decisions have been formed by their personal experiences, which form the basis of their style; something that defines their work as distinctive. Therefore, when it comes to selecting the right fit director for a given project, the choice is just not ‘one-measurement-fits-all’.
One director is perhaps additionalordinary of their handling of sensitive subject material, deftly eliciting an emotional story. Another might need a vibrant and punchy visual model that completely suits the communication model of a selected project, while yet another may be great at working with children to draw out beautiful or hilarious performances. Every film and each consumer is completely different, which is why a director is chosen on a project by project foundation depending on shoot requirements.
On the more logistical side of things, if a production company has more than one director on their books it means they can work on more than one project at a time. On any given day there may very well be several completely different shoots taking place which obviously requires multiple directors & crews.
